Tipton Academy a residential boarding school for troubled boys, is located in Tipton Kansas. All of the boys at Tipton Academy are there for behavioral problems that had escalated beyond their parents ability to manage. While at Tipton the boys are tasked to deal with these behavioral problems while they participate in activities that build their sense of accomplishment. One of these projects is the frisbee golf course. With the help of volunteer instructor, Bill Flipse, the boys worked for months on the project. Most of the boys had no knowledge of the skills involved such as bending mental, welding, cutting, shearing and brazing. Mr. Flipse points out that, after getting the materials, he and the boys built the goals simply by referring to a picture of a goal seen in the area. "We made all our own templates to do the bending, cutting and welding," he said. "And everything was done by the boys with my overseeing them. Over the course of time the course has taken shape and the boys have an immense sense of pride in their work. One said, "I've taken shop class in high school, and this taught me more about welding and working with metal then my old school did. I can take this kind of stuff home and use it to stay out of trouble." After finishing the welding, the boys took the goals to a local company to get them powder coated and to learn the process of powder coating. Powder coating is similar to painting, but is more resistant to damage.
After the powder coating was finished, the boys spent the next few days installing the goals and tee areas, finishing the course in mid-August. One student involved in the project said, "This is the third time I've been through a treatment thing like this, and so far, this is the best. I never did anything like this at any of the other ones before.”
The course is open to the public and is open year round. Students from the local high school often play the course. The course has been a nice contribution to the school and the community of Tipton.
Tipton Academy is always looking for ways to serve others. There have been several times people from surrounding towns have received help from the boys at Tipton Academy. The boys have helped set up for auctions held in Downs and several other small towns. Tipton Academy believes that it is a positive thing for the boys to help others. This is the first time in many of these boys lives that they have done something for someone, and not received pay for it. There is a special feeling that comes from helping someone out. Tipton Academy would like all of its boys to experience that feeling while they are enrolled.
Tipton Academy is not a punitive program; it truly is a positive place for change. Students enrolled at Tipton Academy are not abused or belittled while they are enrolled in the program. Just like in real life the boys are given choices, correct choices produce positive results, and negative choices produce negative results. Tipton Academy provides a safe controlled environment for boys to learn to make positive choices.
